On Saturday August 25th Area 12 hosted a streamed event at which the 2012 World Championships of Public Speaking was shown. The aim of the session was to expose local toastmasters to international level competition as they progress through the club and area levels of the Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contests.
Held at the Entrepreneurial Training Institute & Incubation Centre (ETIIC) in Barataria, the event was attended by toastmasters from around Trinidad & Tobago as well as prospective members.
It began with a tribute to LaShunda Rundles (2008 World Champion) and then proceeded into the viewing. The World Championships of Public Speaking was held in Orlando, Florida on August 18th as part of the 2012 International Convention. The nine finalists were chosen from a field of 30,000 speakers after rounds of contests which began six months earlier in over 13000 clubs across 116 countries.
During the intermission veteran toastmaster Robert De Silva served as Jokemaster. After the break the audience viewed the second place speech “Finding the Right Shoes” delivered by Palaniappa Subramaniam. This speech was used for a mock evaluation contest. Five people participated – Jennifer McCollin was voted “People’s Choice” for best evaluation.
At the conclusion of the streaming, a discussion was held on the contest viewed and the use of such content in future Toastmasters Education and Training initiatives.
