The new executives of Area 12 Toastmasters Clubs participated in their first round of Club Officer Training last Saturday July 7th 2012, at the Entrepreneurial Training Institute & Incubation Centre (ETIIC) facility in Barataria.
Area Governor Florence De Silva led off the afternoon’s proceedings, challenging the new Club Presidents to put their leadership skills into practice by charting and executing a vision for their respective clubs and membership.
“As you know, Toastmasters International aims to develop members’ communication and leadership skills in a mutually supportive and positive learning environment. At Toastmasters, we are about learning by doing.”
The leadership teams were provided with a 6 step roadmap to achieving President’s Distinguished Club status:
1. Devise a VISION
2. Set SMART Goals
3. Create a Club Success-ion Plan
4. Monitor Progress
5. ACE the Moments of Truth
6. Delegate & Coach
Trinidad & Tobago is part of Toastmasters District 81, which encompasses various territories throughout theCaribbean. Area 12 Toastmasters, is one of two areas in Trinidad & Tobago, and consists of three clubs: Dynamic Speakers, Talk Tsu and Nepuyo. The three clubs were represented by a diverse cross section of nationals with professional backgrounds ranging from the banking and insurance industries to the energy sector.
Breakout sessions facilitated by experienced Toastmasters, provided the newly appointed Club Officers with activities to sharpen their focus on the goals and objectives for the 2012 – 2013 term which ends June 30th 2013.
Later, veteran Toastmaster Robert De Silva ended the workshop with a segment titled “Moments of Truth” using the story of Hasely Crawford’s road to Olympic glory in 1976. “Each of us faces that moment, Toastmasters provides the opportunity to practice and prepare for it. Guys, whether it is the presentation of a proposal at work or another kind of proposal, as you know, developing your skills at Toastmasters gives you the confidence to lead and face that moment” Robert quipped.
Upcoming events and activities for the Area 12 Toastmasters Clubs include the Area level of The Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest, which is carded for 8th September, as well as a New Club Charter Ceremony to be held on World Toastmasters Day (October 22, 2012).
